Roasted gram Chutney

We have so far seen red chutney and peanut chutney recipes, today we gonna see the recipe for the white chutney or the roasted gram chutney which complements the Idly/dosa in south indian breakfast items.

This is a 3 ingredient, easy to make recipe and is rich in protein which makes a healthy condiment for the idly, poori, dosa and pongal varieties.


50 gms roasted gram
3 tbsp grated coconut
salt to taste
1 big green chili
oil for tempering
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 Tsp split urad dal/black gram
1 sprig curry leaves, optional

How to make the white chutney

1. In a blender, add roasted gram, green chili, and grated coconut.

2. Blend it coarse for less than a minute.

3. Add water little by little and blend to a smooth paste.

4. Transfer to a bowl.

5. In a pan, add oil and heat it.Once it is warm, add mustard seeds and urad dhal.

6. Once the mustard seeds start to sputter and the urad dhal starts to brown(optionally add curry leaves), switch off the flame.

7. Add the tempering to the chutney bowl. Dilute it if needed and check for salt.

8. Usually, in restaurants, the white chutney is served as a thick paste along with idly/dosa/pongal.
