Jack Fruit Seed Stir Fry

Jack Fruits are one of those summer seasonal fruits like Mango, palm fruit. Each of these fruits have their own taste and jack fruit tastes delicious. The very thought or just the smell of the fruit is mouth watering. In today's recipe, we are going to see the benefits of jack fruit seed and how to make a curry/side dish out of it.

We generally have the habit of discarding the seeds, be it mango, muskmelon, watermelon etc., Well, a seed has all the vital nutrients to grow a plant all by itself. However we cannot eat all the seed varieties except few. Eating Jack fruit seed improves fertility both in men and women as it provides all the essential carbohydrates, proteins and fiber. A point here to be noted is i'm completely talking about jack fruit seed and not the fruit.

In today's recipe, I'm sharing the simplest curry/stir fry with jack fruit seed. It's a tomato onion based curry which goes well with rotis and rice.


25-27 jack fruit seeds
2 medium sized onions, thinly sliced
2 medium sized tomatoes, finely chopped
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
2 cup of water
salt to taste
1/2 tsp hing/asfoetida
a fat pinch of turmeric
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnishing(optional)

How to make Jack Fruit seed curry:

1. Pressure cook the jack fruit seed with 2 cups of water and 1/4 tsp of salt for 3 whistles on medium flame. We just need to use as little as possible here as we would add the salt for entire dish while making the curry.

2. The water turns pinking and the seeds too. Let it cool down.

3. Peel off the skin from the cooked Jack fruit seed and cut each of the seeds into 2-3 pieces depending on the size of the seed.

4. Heat a pan and add oil, mustard seeds and split urad dhal.

5. Add sliced onions once the mustard seeds start to sputter.

6. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for 3-4 minutes on medium flame.

7. Add hing/asfoetida. We add hing because of the gastrogenic effects of jack fruit seed.

8. Then add tomatoes and cook till mushy.

9. Add cooked and chopped jack fruit seeds and stir well.

10. Add salt for the entire dish.

11. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder.

 12. Cook on high flame for 3-4 minutes or until it all comes together nicely. Keep stirring occasionally.

 13. Tada! Jack fruit seed curry to ready to savour!
