Prawns Masala

Prawns are such beauties(excuse me if you are a vegetarian) to cook and it just takes very few minutes to get cooked. One interesting thing to be noted while cooking prawns, are if you cook them too much they would become rubbery. Hence keep an eye on the timings, (hardly 3-4 minutes on high flame, tada prawns are cooked!)

Prawn masala is a traditional recipe cooked with an onion, tomato base with all the spice powders. Finally garnished with cilantro and pepper powder to have that super-hot flavor. Let's look at the step wise pictures and instructions to make this masala.

Ingredients:

250 gms of prawns, deviled and peeled
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/4  tsp +  a pinch of turmeric powder
4/3 tsp pepper powder
1 sprig of curry leaves
1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp urad dhal
2 tsp oil for tempering
6-7 shallots or 2 medium sized onions, finely chopped
1 medium sized tomato, finely chopped
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
salt to taste

How to make prawns masala:

1. Clean the prawns thoroughly by removing the black veins, heads and the shell. Wash it well with running water for about 5-6 times. Add a pinch of turmeric powder to get rid off the raw smell while washing.

2. Heat a pan and add oil for tempering. Add mustard seeds and urad dhal.

3. When the mustard seeds start to sputter, add chopped onions, tomatoes, half of chopped coriander leaves(reserve the remaining for final garnishing), curry leaves, ginger-garlic paste.
This recipe can be tagged as bachelor cooking as it just needs less effort (except for cleaning the prawns). Saute well for 2-3 minutes on high flame.

4. Then add salt so that onions and tomatoes get cooked quickly. Saute for 2-3 minutes.

5. Add turmeric powder and red chilli powder.

6. Add 1/4 cup of water and let it boil.

7. Add pepper powder and simmer till the water evaporates.

8. Add cleaned and washed prawns. Mix it well.

9. Cook on high flame for about 4-5 minutes. Keep stirring now and then so that the masala doesn't get stuck to the bottom of the pan.

10. Voila! yummy shrimp masala is ready to gobble. Happy eating!
