Steamed Caramel Custard

Custard is usually made with the store brought custard powder. I use to mix some fresh fruits to the custard and have it as a dessert. Off late i started disliking it for some reason and wanted to try this particular dessert from scratch. I however tried with egg and bread for the very first time and it turned out pretty good and yum too!

I would soon try out an eggless version as i have the ingredients ready in my pantry. This is so damn easy and it just needs a steamer for the cooking process so dont worry if you do not own a oven. Here you go - tried and tested version of bread caramel custard. Do give it a try and share your feedback. Happy Cooking! 😊😊😊

1 bread slice
1 egg
100 ml milk
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 tbsp milk powder
2 tbsp sugar + 1 tbsp sugar

In a blender or mixer add roughly broken bread pieces.

Add milk.

Then add egg.

Add Sugar.

Add milk powder. You can add condensed milk in place of milk powder wherein the amount of sugar need to be reduced a bit as condensed milk contain sugar.

Add vanilla essence.

Pulse it till the ingredients are blended well.

Heat a non-stick pan and add a tbsp sugar.

Let it melt and caramelize on medium flame. Do not stir. Just watch the beauty of sugar melting. :)

It takes about 4-5 minutes. By then the caramel gets a little bit thicker. Be careful not to burn. Once the sugar turns into brown gel, switch off the flame.

Grease a bowl or ramkin with ghee or butter.

Pour the caramel syrup onto the greased bowl.

Then transfer the custard contents from blender to the bowl.

Cover the bowl with a foil.

Place it in a steamer with half of the bowl dipped in water.

Steam cook for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted at the center comes out clean.

Wow! yummy bread caramel custard is ready.

Pop the custard in fridge for about 3 hours and serve!
